The SSR Type X Wheel - Tales From The Old-School
During the stateside Honda movement's early '90s infant stages, the aftermarket wheel industry was quickly becoming clone like. Month after month new wheels were introduced to the market, many bearing an all too familiar resemblance to their predecessors. With the five-spoke and mesh wheel market completely saturated, SSR introduced a cutting-edge design that swam aggressively against the aftermarket stream.
Released in the early '90s, the concept behind the SSR Type X wheel was that of weight consciousness, strength, rigidity, but without losing its street functionality. The unusual four-spoke wheel featured a split-spoke design, tapering as it reached the wheel's lip, allowing for a reduction in unsprung weight and increased brake cooling efficiency-both important characteristics for track or street performance.
Type X wheels originally retailed for about $360 each and were offered in an all-white, all-silver, or red and black color combination. Sizing options were limited to 15-inch diameters with 6.5- and 7-inch widths. Confirmed offsets included a +38 and +42 in both the popular 4x100 and 4x114 lug patterns.
Type Xs can still be found today for sale in most Honda-based Web forum classifieds. Many enthusiasts have gone so far as to track down a set with the sole purpose of painting or powdercoating theirs for the sake of exclusivity. Since finding a set in decent condition shouldn't be too difficult, and pricing is generally well under $1,000, they're as affordable as they are functional.
