I am surprised Honda still thinks a V-6 will cut it in this class. A V-8 is mandatory, not because a V-6 theoretically won't stastically cover it, but buyers in this class scoff at anything that doesn't have two banks of four cylinders.

A V-8 with AWD seems reasonably easy for Honda to do.

anyway, I agree with Acurafanatic. People in RL and NSX's target market want a v8 RWD..and thats that.

Yianni, i would absolutely love to see a RWD v8 in Acura line up

I think this is just an issue of conflicting philosophies. To the American consumer, it doesn't matter that 6 cylinders can do the job of 8. An 8 cylinder engine has status.

However, Honda's ever green philosophy sticks to the logistics, ignoring the fact that people in the market for a V8 don't care that this Honda/Acura can match or even outperform it. It's still only a V6/I6/H6/whatever-6, and that's just so middle class.

Ahhhh no Flat Six Babing, way too dirty. The rest of your post I agree with...Americans are very idealistic. Yianni, you can't have a FWD V8, so it's V8 and AWD/RWD or just RWD.

BTW, how is the Q45 selling? I know it's doing bad, but how bad? JD Powers used to have a feature where yoiu could see how cars were selling by class. I wish I could find out how the RL is holding up.

Other V8 RWD sedans:

model_________| May 2002 sales | 2002 YTD
Lexus GS430 __| 277 ___________| 1,052
BMW 540i _____| 462 ___________| 2262

Other higher-end brands that don't carry a RWD 8 cylinder passenger car currently:
Saab
Volvo
Chrysler
Buick
Cadillac

IMO, Honda's doing the smart thing, business-wise, by focusing on what your market is rather than diversifying too quickly. Remember that Honda is still a relatively small automobile company like BMW. Getting taken over is fairly easy for Honda if they screw up big time. Bringing out a RWD V8 passenger car does not equate to more success since that customer base is very small and grabbing a piece of that market share is very difficult. Example seen with the new Q45 sales and GS430. I would love to see Honda have a RWD V8 RL, but in reality, I would probably never buy one, mostly because I would never pay more than the equivlant of $40,000 in today's money for a car.

lol...why does Lexus still bother with the GS430? Just as an image car? It has such a small niche yet I see them advertising it constantly.
