BMW, Honda Shine at 'Engine Oscars' of 2002

http://carpoint.msn.com/advice/stand...21118&src=News

The all-new BMW 745i's 4.4-liter Valvetronic engine is named "International Engine of the Year" for 2002, while a pair of Honda hybrid powertrains take three category wins.

BMW and Honda executives celebrated on May 15 as several of their products dominated the Fourth Annual International Engine of the Year Awards ceremony, held at Engine Expo 2002 in Stuttgart, Germany.
The International Engine of the Year Awards 2002 were voted for by a panel of 40 top automotive journalists from 18 countries including the U.S., France, the UK, South Africa, Australia and Canada.

Among the American contingent were Csaba Csere and Frank Markus, respectively editor-in-chief and technical director at Car and Driver magazine; Dennis Simanaitis and Patrick Hong, who work as engineering editor and road test editor at Road & Track magazine, and top veteran freelance journalist Jim McCraw.

Canadian journalists took part in the voting process for the first time this year. Its representatives on the jury were David Booth, editor and publisher of Autovision magazine, and MSN Carpoint Canada editor Marc Lachapelle.

Technology Recognized
The awards results saw the German and Japanese brands BMW and Honda each win four of the 11 individual categories. BMW's 3.0-liter and 3.2-liter units topped their respective classes for the second year running, and Honda's hybrids, including the new Civic 1.3-liter IMA, took three trophies. The Japanese carmaker's fourth prize was scooped by the S2000's 2.0-liter.

The success of BMW and Honda meant just three other marques—General Motors, Toyota, and PSA Peugeot-Citro?n—collected trophies in 2002.

General Motors representatives were delighted to learn that their bold AUTOnomy hydrogen-powered vehicle concept, unveiled at the last North American International Auto Show in Detroit, had trumped the likes of Mercedes-Benz's Necar 5 and BMW's Hydrogen 7-Series to take home the Best Concept trophy.

Toyota's 1.8-liter VVTL-i four-cylinder engine bowled judges over with its blend of power and economy. PSA Peugeot-Citro?n, the French company renowned for its diesel expertise, took the 2.0- to 2.5-liter class with its 2.2-liter HDi direct-injection diesel, beating competition from rivals such as Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen.

Motoren Indeed
But at the end of the day, it was BMW's staff who wore the biggest smiles. As well as triumphing in four awards categories, the Bavarians scooped the coveted International Engine of the Year 2002 title for a second consecutive year—the crown (won by the M3's 3.2-liter in 2001) went to the 4.4-liter V8 housed in the range-topping 745i.

The judges said this 325-horsepower Double VANOS and Valvetronic-equipped unit is "smooth, throttle-responsive and throaty, it lifts the technology of big-capacity petrol engines to another plateau," characteristics that have earned BMW the right to say once again that it builds the best engine in the world.

Editor's Note: The International Engine of the Year Awards 2002 are presented by industry magazine Engine Technology International, published by UK & International Press, a British company that receives no advertising or financial support from any car manufacturer or distributor.
Below are the winners for 2002—overall and in the 11 awards categories:

I think people usually agree that Honda is king of the 4-cyl and BMW is king of the 6-cyl. That doesnt meant that other company's dont make good/better engines, but just that Honda and BMW have gotten those respective engines down.

Well it's not technically *new*. It's still just the J-series engine.

BMW is n/a too

Sure the S2K is great but don't take away from BMW. These awards really do not surprise me though...Hpnda and BMW are probably the best builders of engines in the world. I do think the S2K should have got the award Toyota did with their 1.8. But I guess you have to make things somewhat even!

Honda 2-liter (S2000)

Honda won...

in the Best 1.4-liter to 1.8-liter

And Yamaha helped quite more than necessary in the development of Toyo's 1.8. I'm kinda surprised the K20A from the G4 ITR (220HP) didn't beat out the S2K, because it has such better low end and midrange torque.

I think this is for engines produced in US cars only, or else there's many other engines out there that's better than the one on this list.

OK, my mistake. If this is the case, then what is the criteria for the engine to be a winner? example, why did the Civic Hybrid engine win the 1L-1.4L? The RX-7 has a 1.3L. Wouldn't that make a better choice for winner? Another example, why would the S2000 engine win the 1.8L-2.0L class when the WRX STi 22B and the EVO VII both are 2.0L that has about 280HP stock with 300+lb tq to boot.

I think that the engines that won were for the best overall designs and build quality, performance, innovation, fuel economy, etc. It doesn't seem as if they went for the engines with the most power and none were FI...all fo them were either NA or NA with IMA.
