A 1st or 2nd gen. CRV?

I'm considering buying a used CRV LX 2WD. So far, the only thing REALLY major bad I've heard has been about the A/C. The latest posting here on the A/C "problem" is that Honda "may" have changed the condenser supplier in '04 or simply changed/upgraded the compresser and/or condenser....did it fix the problem?

A seperate question has to do with any possible engine transplants with a 1st gen. CRV....has anyone heard of this?

BTW, the 2 vehicles I'm looking at are a 2000 CRV with 165K on it and an '04 with approx. 41K.
