Default 2005 CR-V license plate screws

I have a question about what screws should be used with the rear license plate on the 2005 cr-v. The dealer installed the license plate with one of those thick plastic plate holders (with the dealer logo). I am trying to remove the plate holder, but the screws seem to bottom out before getting tight against the relatively thin plate. Am I using the correct screws? They look like sheet metal type screws (pointed tip) about a half inch long. Should I just keep torquing until it gets tight? Or should I be using a machine type screw?

Thanks,
Rich
