Default 96-98 RL info needed- new member

Hello. I am new here and have a few questions. I am considering buying a 1996-98 Acura RL and need some information on these cars. What trouble areas should I check when shopping for one of these cars? I have heard that the transmissions on the 96s are troublesome. Is this true and if so, what is the approx. mileage that they go? I have also seen a post here about dash lights being out on a 99 model. Is this a common problem on the 96-98s as well? Seems odd for dash lights to be out on a 1999 model car, especially an Acura.
I am also considering a 98-99 Honda Accord. For the money, which would be the better car? I prefer the Acura, for a smoother ride. Do these cars have a soft, floaty ride? Any information appreciated.

Yeah, I've got some advice you can buy mine!!! I love my car, the transmission problem was fixed with a recall, however, mine was not included in that recall. I have had no problems! I have done all maintenance work such as replacing all belts, including timing done at an Acura dealer. I have 18" rims on it and love the ride and the handleing. Acura's instrument lights, unlike most cars, stay on all the time, when you turn off the car, the instrument cluster is not visible, this is why they burn out. Anyway, I'm asking 12K for it. Call me at (337)257-4610 and we can negotiate a deal.

Come check it out at:cardomain.com

True, the lights in the dash burn out too frequently. I agree, they're on all the time so they are overworked. But I'm bitter cuz I had to damage my speedometer in the process of changing lightbulbs.

Besides that, I think the RL is an excellent car. I recommend one with the Bose 6-CD changer.

Yeap the 96 RL does have transmission problems. Before you buy one check that the transmission has been serviced and fixed under the racall notice for the transmission. I bought one and not long after that my transmission went out, it had around 96,000 miles on it. I had a 2002 trans put on it. I payed 600 for the trans and paid around 800 to have it put on at the Acura dealer. Other than that, the RL is a good car for the money.

Was this a recall or a TSB?

Have the Bose stereos in the 97-98 been an issue? The Bose in my '95 Maxima sucked. Major problems. I'm very leary to buy anything with a Bose system. They sound great...when they work!

the transmission recall really wont fix anything but its a good thing do have been performed. the transmissions tend to fail around 100k as well as the diff and the abs seals. the dash lights can burn out its not a big issue though, and the bose systems are great. the cars are pretty much standard honda bulletproof cars that will run forever if properly maintenanced. the only other thing u want to look at is the speed of the power windows. if one is moving slowly then you can plan to replace that pretty soon, thats the only other thing that tends to go on those vehicles.
