Timing Belt

I am not seeing comments about timing belts and was wondering what has been the experince of those who either 1) had a belt break or 2) didn't change the belt and went over the recommended miles. Please post your experience if you fall in either of those categories, or have knowledge how critical this issue is. My '98 RL has 98,000 miles so is 10 years old, but the book says to change the belt at 105,000 (?), so wondering how critical this might be. I got a quote from a non-dealer for $825 to replace.
