Default Eating oil bad

My 96 Ls has 62,500 miles and its going through a quart of oil about every 1000 miles. Is it the valve guides or piston rings ( which one most likely)? What kind of test should i do? Any suggestions as to how to attack it i.e. new engine, rebuild just what is broken, or start bullet proofing it (my heart is really set on buying a greddy turbo kit from guy i know)?

If Its smoking just a few seconds after start up, thats valve guides. If it smokes the whole time it's running, that's the rings. But at 62k it shouldn't be losing any oil at all! At least not that much. mine has 188k and doesn't burn any. Best bet would be do a compression test and a leak-down test. That will more than likely find your problem.

i was burning 1 quart every 1000 miles and i got all freaked out....i had a compression and leakdown tests performed but nothing was found...it turns out it was the rsx oil filters i was using. now its 1 quart every 1700-1800 miles which i've been told is normal for "aggressive" but not "harsh" driving.

i usually shift at 4k and do a lot of spirited driving could that be what is causing the consumption? my car doesnt smoke when running but ill check if it smokes during start up.

yeah i usually drive spiritedly and shift around 4k (rarely any higher). i tried driving like a grandma, shifting at 2700, but it didnt affect the level of oil consumption.

another factor for me is that i'm a big guy, and i'm running about an extra 100 pounds in the trunk in the form of stereo equipment.

overall my car is just a bit over 3000 pounds with me in it.

what kind of oil are you using?, if 5w30 its probobly time for you to step it up a notch to 10w30 or 10w40.

my teg was taking a quart every 1200 or so with 5w30, and ever sice i bumped it up to 10w 30 its fine.

In hot summer months i usally mix 1 quart 15w50 with 3 10w40's. oil gets real thin as it gets hot, 15 is thicker and doesnt thin as easaly

My integra doesn't burn any oil. I don't even have to check it until my 3,000 mile oil change. And I abuse my car more than 90% of the people here. 5k shifts are normal for me. 6500+ shifts aren't unexpected.

Always check the cheap stuff first. Check and see if your PCV system is not clogged. Make sure your PCV valve is working properly. The service manual says to pinch the line going from the PCV valv to the Intake Manifold. If there's no clicking sound, replace it. Also check to see if there's oil splattered around the breather hose's inlet (that thing going from the valve cover to the intake pipe). If there is oil there, you've got air going the wrong direction, but anyway, one thing at a time.

I'm not checking back on this thread. Good luck.

WOW this guy should get a friggin metal. Doesn't burn oil **AND** he's a racecar driver!!! We should all hope to be like him one day. It is a good thing that he has his service manual, or we'd all be clueless.

I'm not checking back on this thread either.
