you will need to go under your car and through the cabin. having a lift will make it super easy but at least jackstands will make it tolerable. i did my civic before in about an hour(not counting breaks)

it's a relatively easy bolt in affair. as long as you have ample access under your car. on a scale of 1-10, i'd give it a 4., a 2 if you have a lift. i think you could even use ramps!

    you can..

cut the OEM shifter down and get a tap and die set and get new threads in.

    OR

you can go on eBay and order some cheap short shifters.

take your shift knob and boot off.
jack your car up, and unbolt your oem shifter.
and replace the shifter only, refit the bushings and bolts back on, and put everything back together.

I hope that was a joke... Not trying to be an ass, but the point of a short shifter is to shorten the throw - that has to do with the design of the shifter.

Cutting your stock shifter will actually make your throw longer and worsen the situation.

But anyways, its really easy to do. The first time I did it, it took about 30min. Basically, what you're doing is taking the shifter apart from the shift linkage (which goes to the transmission) and simply replacing it. B&M makes half decent shifters which can be found relatively cheap. I've heard a lot of stories about ebay shifters snapping, so I wouldn't recommend shopping for one there.

The bottom of the shifter that connects to the shift linkage is outlined by the yellow circle in the first picture:
