2000 Civic Clutch, Bearing? Help!!!

Hi, I have a 2000 Civic DX hatch with a manual transmission. For a couple of months I have had a gradual increase in noise coming from from my car. It can be compared to a general whirring from the transmissin region. Now, when I push in the clutch (or push down on the pedal) the noise ceases. When I realease the clutch pedal the noice comes back. Also, It becomes louder as I drive.

I must note, it is not extremely loud but more of an annoyance.

What do you think this could be?
