Removing the A/C is easy. Take it to a shop to have the freon removed. Bring it back home and unbolt all the A/C parts, it's very straightforward.
You can swap in a B18A/B for under $3k.

I took the whole A/C and Heater system out of a 88 civic LX yesterday. Even with every part of the inside stripped and out of the way, it was still hard to do. I had to rip half the stuff out.
