- Jack up the tranny until it's in line with the engine and then pick up the tranny and push the tranny shaft back into the motor. This can be a very tiring ordeal as the splines need to line up correctly. You may need to twist the tranny from side to side to line them up. When everything is aligned correctly, the tranny will slide close to the engine and you will be able to put a couple of the 17mm bolts back in to hold the tranny onto the motor so you can step away.
- Get back under the car and put the flywheel cover back on enough so that it will stay until you can put all of the bolts back in correctly. - Put all of the upper tranny to enigne bolts back in and tighten them up. - Jack up the engine/tranny so that you can put the upper tranny mount back on. Tighten the bolts/nuts. - At this point, I hate to pull a 'repeat steps 2 through 3942832', but that's really all you have to do. Just put all of the bolts back in their place and do it in the order you removed them. I would leave the intake off for now though. - When reinstalling the axles into the hub, put a bit of that grease onto the splines of the axles so that they do not rust inside of the hubs. - When you have the lower balljoints back in place, torque them to 47 ft/lbs. - Also, torque the axle nuts to 134 ft/lbs and bend the outer lip of the nut down where the cutout is on the axle to keep the nut from working its way off the axle. You may need that helper to hold the brakes for you while you torque the nut back down. - Torque the wheel lug nuts down to 80 ft/lbs - Once you have everything reinstalled, refill the transmission. - Start by putting the oil pan under the outer end of the tranny and removing the check bolt on the end of the tranny. It's a flat bolt with a square hole in it that you use a 3/8" ratchet to remove. Take this bolt out. - Also remove the 10mm bolt that holds your speed sensor in place and pull the speed sensor out of the top of the tranny. It will look like this when it's out: ![]() - Use a long funnel and put it in this hole. Pour just over 2 quarts of MTF into the funnel until you see it start to run out of that check hole where you removed that flat bolt. - Reinstall the flat bolt and the speed sensor. Reconnect the wiring plug to the speed sensor. - When all is said and done, you can go ahead and bleed the clutch if you choose to. We did not open the line up at all, but this car had not had it done before so we thought it would be a good idea. - Start by removing the small rubber cover from the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. I use a little 'easy bleeder' bottle and a tube to make it simple. ![]() - Remove the clutch master cylinder reservoir cap and fill it up with clutch/brake fluid. ![]() - Have your helper pump the clutch and hold it while you loosen the 8mm bleeder valve. Repeat this process until you are sure that there is no air bubbles coming out. - Keep an eye on that reservoir because if it runs out of fluid you have to start all over and there will be a whole lot of air in the system. - When you're sure that the air is all gone, tighten up the bleeder valve, remove your easy bleeder canister, put the rubber bleeder valve cap back on, fill the reservoir back up, and reinstall the cap of the reservoir. That should do it. You now have a brand new clutch and flywheel installed on your car and possibly more if you went with new axles. If you have any questions or need some pointers let me know. This is a pretty involved job so take your time and be meticulous. Extra parts is a bad thing. ![]() Hope this helps someone!

looks amazing!! Oh wait... that looks like my car.... wait a minute, that is my car (I can tell be the dirty engine bay) Awesome write up man, someone shoud definitely look at this now and be able to do it. Your expertise will help lots of people I am sure. Still taking some time getting used to it, but I still haven't stalled it, even on a real steep hill. Rolling the tires however is another story.....

great write up...I am doing my buddies clutch right now, and I figured out a couple steps to get by a few things...such as, I did not have to remove the axle nut, ball joints, or the spring pin...didnt have to touch them...there is a much easier way to get the hub to swing away and the axles out. It prob. shaved a couple hours off the clock, at least judging from how long it took to get my spring pin and axle nuts off when I did my swap....buttt great diy

I was very suprised with how easy everything came off and went back on, we really had no snags in the plan whatsoever. With all the air tools and the Big Ass Hammer, all that stuff comes off pretty quick. Except for the cotter pins in the ball joints.
I have to say something..... My name is Chris, and I am cotter pin illiterate.

Excellent write up! I do not suggest, however, wearing open-toe sandals while doing automotive duties. Toes can go missing quickly.

lol, I have done 3 swaps bare foot!
Nice write up man. I think you hit everything on the head! The only thing I'm still scratching my head with is, that clutch fluid was NASTY. Drain that shit and start from scratch. You'll get a much better pedal feel! And all that rust and grat can eat at the seals on the master and slave cylinders... |

no matter how many write ups i see, nothing can convince me to do a flywheel and clutch install for anyone.
i'd rather do a swap. every flywheel and clutch install i've done has been nightmareish. |

How critical is it to use 'clutch' fluid over 'brake' fluid? Bumnah: This was actually the easiest of these I've done. Nothing bound or broke or just 'happened'. I was very happy about that.

we were doing a flywheel and clutch fix, and the clutch masters bolts stripped (hex). so we tried to drill, and the drill bit broke inside the bolt. so we're there with this motor being held up by my floor jack, stripped bolt on the clutch flywheel assembly, and a broken drill bit inside the bolt. it's about 2 am, and i got just one day to fix this car and have it back on the road.
flywheel and clutch installs..... they can go to hell!

to this day i do not understand why people pull the speend sensor to fill up the tranny, especially when they have the filler bolt out.
why? why? fill it up from the top? |

Seems to me that they need to be replaced, which they will be after about the other 5 grand worth of stuff is done to my car. Just like a lot of other stuff, it is on my list. Just not enough time or money for this stuff right now. I could have paid the car off with all the stuff that I have bought for it in the last month!!

![]() The filler bolt is just behind the pass. side axle and you have to use that injector tool to get it in. It's a messy and annoying job. I've found it SO much easier to remove the 1 10mm (2 on the Bseries trannys) bolt and just fill 'er up from the top.

when you say check bolt i take it you are referring you the filler bolt you remove to check the level of the tranny. because you should feel fluid on the bottom tip of your finger when you reach in the filler bolt.
you can't check the fluid of the tranny from the drain bolt (the one you put the rachet directly on) since the fluid drains from the drain bolt. so now i've heard of people removing the filler bolt, AND the speed sensor to fill the tranny fluid through the speed sensor and let it pour out of the filler bolt. that makes absolutely no sense to me. i mean seriously. i've used a funnel with a tube for years. not issues at all. frankly i've seen 2 speed sensors break when removed. i advice you use the filler bolt to fill the tranny. also have the car level will filling the tranny, if the front's jacked up, fluid comes out of the tranny before it's actually full. it's also not a bad idea to replace the washer on the drain bolt when you do it. |

BTW never use a pickle fork to remove a ball joint you plan on reusing if you can help it. They tend to screw them up. My set sits in the drawer and collects dust. The proper way to remove a ball joint is to undo the nut and smack the side of the spindle until the ball joint simply falls out. As for working on automobiles barefoot or wearing sandals. Just because you did something stupid several times without getting hurt doesn't make it a good idea. Thats like having sex without a condom. Thanks for taking the time to photodocument your swap. I'm sure a lot of people will find it quite useful.

NP great thread and a big help for anyone doing this job. I wish I had something like this to refer to when I did my clutch and axles in my CRX. My friend has Alldata, but that is nothing like having a step-by-step with nice clear photos. A big TTT for this thread.
