I put Royal Purple SAE 10W40 in my rebuilt L3. I'm really pleased with the way it performs. On the next fluid change I may put in their XPR 5W30. Those are the two cross-referenced RP products closest to Honda MTF.
Four quarts sounds like too much; the L3 barely takes two. Just make sure your car is level and start filling into the fill plug on the side. The correct fluid level should be even with the bottom of the fill plug hole, so as soon as fluid starts coming out while filling just put the plug back on and you should be done. Be careful not to over-tighten the plug bolt or drain bolt; I've seen stripped threads and cracked cases from this.
