Default Code PO740-Any Suggestions?

CEL came on monday and just got it read today and it came back as code PO740 which is converter clutch malfunction... anyone have any ideas on what might have caused this? cleared the code and hasn't come back today so far but trans has 156K and i'm starting to worry about it. Wasn't flogging car or anything, just casually driving when it came on...

Chances are pretty high that your trans is toast.

you didn't mention the year of the car but if i had to guess 96-97 accord ? if so are you using honda atf ? if not it will cause problems and that code and depending on the freeze data you might need a updated PCM also.

It is a 96 DX/value pkg. and yes, i'm supposed to be using Honda ATF, had it changed a couple of months ago when i had my driveaxle changed, but they told me it didn't matter and they could use additives to bring regular fluid to honda standards (after I had to win the argument over flushing my trans.) but i told them i wanted it done with honda fluid and even supplied it, but i did notice i didn't get the other half-quart back (gave them three quarts) so i do wonder sometimes... I cleared the code off and i'm waiting to see if it comes back though...

I heard this P0740 can happen on the 96-97 if you don't use honda atf , next time check the freeze data and note the speed when it happened .

A transaxle drain/refill takes 3 1/2 quarts. A flush takes about 12 quarts.

P0740 Automatic Transaxle. Solenoid A/B.

thats what the code is. I got that code and changed my solenoid. Thats the solenoid that controls the shifting from 1st to 2nd.
Are you experiencing any shifting issues?

Honda used to recommend solenoid replacement, however the new solenoids usually die to to metal particals in the trans fluid (when a trans starts to die.)

Now, the official fix is to replace the trans, flush the cooler and install a filter inline with the cooler. That kinda sucks.

I seriously need to flush my tranny.
Im going to go today and buy like 10 quarts of ATF.
I typically drain and re-fill but, if I got that code a long time ago then chances are i may have metal shavings around my torque converter or something.

Im sure once I remove the drain plug I could pass my finger along the bolt and feel the shavings?
