Default Tranny Fluid - Do You Ever Replace 100% of it?

Hi,

I have 2005 Accord 4cyl Auto (if it is relevant). My question is general in nature;

If you drain tranny fluid every 10-15,000 miles, do you ever need to replace 100% of tranny fluid. It is my understanding that draining replaces only 1/3 of tranny fluid so is there a point (i.e. at 100,000 miles) at which (instead of doing a drain) one needs to (and how?) replace 100% of the liquid?

Also, is there anything "bad" about draining the fluid every 10k miles?

Thanks.

i did twice tranny fluid change for one scheduled work on my 99. i first drained out every bit of it, wipe out the metal dirt on the magnetic drain bolt, and fill in new ATF. after about 200-300 miles, i drained it out and fill it up again.

draining never replaces all the fluid since 1/3 of it is still in the torque converter(?). draining every 10k miles may be a bit overkill, but it wont do anything "bad" to the tranny.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Each time I drain I make sure the pan is wiped too.

Still, is there a point at which 100% of fluid needs to be replaced even though you did the drain every 10k miles?

And having in mind that Honda does not recommend power flush, how do you replace 100% of fluid WITHOUT doing power flush?

Thx

What you do is replace the trans fluid 3 times. Drain the fluid and refill it. After refilling either drive the car around the block or jack the car up with the front wheels off the ground and run it for a couple of mins. Then drain the fluid again. Repeat this step 3 times. This procedure is listed in the owners manual.

i guess if you want to drain and fill every 10k miles... go ahead. youre fine.

you cant really replace 100%, but 3 drain and fills are sufficient enough.
