I have a 1992 Honda Accord EX with 144K on it. In the last couple of weeks, I started to feel a vibration in the steering wheel. The steering wheel does not move back and forth, but stays in one place and vibrates. The vibration is the same when I first start driving and 2 hours after driving. It does, though, get worse when it is colder outside and is more noticable when I move the steering wheel slighly, almost like some sort of gyroscopic effect. The rotors are warped, but not real bad (I have driven cars with rotors so warped the steering wheel felt like it was going to break loose when braking, but there were no vibrations under normal driving). Just replaced all the tires and driveshafts. I jerked on all the suspension components and nothing was loose, plus the lower ball joints and outer tie rods are less than a year old. I do not think the vibration is related to loose suspension components, but instead to something that is rotating because there is a definite relationship between tire speed and the vibration. I am running out of ideas of what could be causing this. Any ideas would help alot. Thanks
I had my wheels balanced when I got the new tires put on, and I do get vibration when I brake but it is different from the vibration that happens during normal driving.
yea man. What sucks is that I just had to rotors put on this past summer and i am getting the shakes again already. I got brembo blanks and aem pads. its not as bad as before. I can see me getting some slotted rotors though.
I own a 5th gen sedan!
The plan doesn't fail you, you fail the plan.
This may not be your problem, but a couple of times in the past I had a bad shimmy/vibration problem that coincidently started after I drove on a muddy road. What happened was that the mud caked onto the wheel, and after it dried out a piece of the mud broke off, unbalancing the wheel.
get your rotors turned if they are warped, and then see if it still happens. If they are badly warped, I can see them "throwing the wheel out of balance" since they spin on the same axis.
Also, I know this sounds really silly, but make sure you have all your lug nuts.
I'm having a similar problem, when I step on the break my steering wheel slightly vibrates, it only happened when I purchased the new rims and tires, could it be just a simple wheel balancing or alignment? Dont know much about cars . Thanks.

if it vibrates only when you brake... then your rotors are warped.
How much does it cost to have the rotors fixed from a honda dealer? And what is causing the rotors to warp? Is it just coincidence that I changed my rim and tires that the rotors warped? Thanks

if they are wirthin thickness spec, then resurafacing of the disc is pretty damn cheap.
not sure about the conincidence thine...maybe check that the lug nuts are tightened?
What's the best place to have my rotors/brakes check aside from the dealer? What company? I live in Walnut, CA. Is the brake masters company good? Thanks guys.
And what's the difference between "turning the rotors" and "resurface the rotors? Is it the same thing?

walnut or walnut creek?
no difference in "turning" and "resurafacing"
although there are two ways of resurfacing, one being much more expensive than the other
I went to one shop here in Pomona and the guy said I need to replace my rotor because its already too thin, it has 8.36 (left side) on their ruler thing reader, I didnt see the other wheel, so I purchased a new rotor (not sure what brand) and a new set of ceramic pads, they also adjusted and clean the rear brakes. All for $320. Have I been had? Or is this a good deal? Does my old rotor unrepairable? Thanks.

$320 for a brake job! Personally I would have bought the stuff from a parts store and done the work myself. It's only about an 1 to 2 hour job, if you know how to do it, and most of the time you can get 2 new rotors and pads all for under $200. Even if you opted to get drilled and slotted discs, cost would still be a lot less than $320!

Honda pads are typically $40-60 a set while rotors are like $80. So I can do front and rear for less than $400 using OEM quality parts. I've had good success with NAPA rotors though.
im sure most of you know this but for those who dont the 90-93 accord front rotors are pressed on so its not as easy as taking of the wheel and caliper assembly to replace the rotors. you eaither need a special machine or a slide hammer and alot of elbow grease and if you dont know what you are doing dont even attempt it!!
but 320 for one side is tooo much, i had honda do my fronts i brought my own rotors they charged me 220, for labor,
now about the shaking dont let people confuse you, i have had this problem for a long time, its most likey your wheel bearing and/or hub.
can very well be your axels too, on our cars from some reason wen the cv joints go bad they wobble!
just have it checked out because it can be a combination of everything, but if you only did one rotor on one side that was a bad idea, anyone know that if you are doing a rotor job you need to do both sides at the same time, hope this information helps you!

i actually have a DIY on this and all i needed was a long bolt and a regular hammer.

The $320 is actually for both rotors, left and right do those brake shops check the cv joints and wheel bearing and/or hub? What's a good shop to have these cheked? Thanks much.

If it doesn rotate the tires from front to back just too see if it a balancing issue. Sometimes balancers at shops arent calibrated well so they might be off a lil. If rotating doesnt help then take ur car to a shop to balance the tires(different one from where the tires were installed) and also ask them to check the balance before popping off the wieghts that are installed already.
When wheel bearings(also known as a wheel hub on accords) go bad they hum and they have play which might cause a disturbance but i have never noticed them to shake the steering wheel. If something is humming then while driving straight when noise is humming then turn the wheels left and right(a good amount so the car loads most of the weight to different wheels) if the noise goes away when turning left then it is the left wheel bearing and if it goes away while turining right then it is the right wheel bearing.
Sorry for the long post but hopefully it will help you out

honestly dont waste your money.. its the tires that is causing your car to vibrate. due to bad alignment, when you drive the tires wear unevenly. and when that happen the tires start to get bumpy.. so when you drive it feels like you have some kind of suspension problem. best thing to do is get brand new tires on the front with balance and a good alignment.
