Rear seal leak/Engine Oil leak

Hello everyone,

I have an ongoing problem which I am hoping someone can help me with. I have a 99 EL Acura 5spd which i have had for about 3 years now. Ive noticed for a long while now that my engine oil light keeps going on when I check my oil, the oil level is very low (which I have to top up every so often.) When I brought my car to get the oil change, the mechanics told me that it was a rear seal leak after investigating it.

My questions are:

a) how expensive is this?
b) is there a cheaper of way getting it fixed? (that is, me purchasing the gasket and seal from like discount place or a junk yard or whatever and doing it myself)

My previous car was a honda civic lx sedan and it gave me the same problems before it died on me. I read somewhere that this is a common problem with hondas/acuras. Why?????

Thanks,

first off you never replace a seal with a part from a junkyard. you would have to buy a brand new seal which is not super expensive. The hard part or expensive part is getting to the damn thing. To get it out you pretty much need the engine out of the car and you have to tear the bottom end apart to get it out. So it would be fairly expensive. I would see if you could source a motor/ or do the work yourself either way its a bitch.

Urrgh.. that is what I was afraid of. I did some research and read that literally the mechanics need to take the engine out in order to do it (which is why it is so damn expensive in the first place.) Any other alternatives? (thanks shameinator for the reply)

How much is your mechanic charging? I would honestly either get rid of the car or swap the engine, but thats just me.

You would need to take the tranny out of the car, but not the engine. If you need a new clutch this would be a good time to do it, as you need to remove the old one from the engine, along with the flywheel, to access the rear main seal.

Cool guys thanks. I am gonna do some more research and see. My father claims that he knows someone who might be able to do it but I am not keeping my heads up.

And no I am not getting a new car or selling it! Other than that, the car is in perfect condition and I love it.

^^^ This

It really isn't all that difficult if you have good mechanical ability and the proper tools to get done in your driveway on a weekend. I would give yourself ample time since it would be a first time thing, and make sure you have the proper tools and a Haynes/Chiltons/etc. Can save yourself alot of money and gain some hands on time with your own car.
