    ECU made my car overheat!!!

    Hello all,

My name is Josh, and I just recently purchased a p28 ecu off of ebay. I had a d16z6 swapped in my 4dr DX in November and never got around to replacing the ecu. I finally did it, and put it in today. When I unplugged the p06 I had been running, and put the p28 in, my check engine light came on. I thought nothing of it, which I should have, but im stupid for that. After driving for about 20 minutes, pulling up to a friends house I noticed my heat gauge was all the way up! HELP!

A virgin P28 or is it chipped?

What code is it? Does the numbering on the sticker on the ECU actually say P28?

somehow i have a feeling that the CEL & the over heating problem may not be related.. u'r gonna have to tell us what code your throwing & get a little more detailed about the problem.

    ECU details?

From the little knoweldge that I do have of my car, I do know that I still need the vtec solenoid to have working vtec. If need more info to help my problem, please be more detailed for the deatails I must give to you. Attached is what I believe is the plug for the vtec solenoid. Thanks. Have a nice day.

Look in the online resources sticky to get the instructions to check the Check Engine Light (CEL) codes.

Looks like the VTEC solenoid isn't even connected. Look for a connector laying around somewhere and plug it in. Checking your codes for the CEL would give us the most understanding of the problem.

My guess is that u are using a DX harness right? U need to either get a SI harness or wire in the vtec wires.

    vtec is the problem

OK so i jumped the switch to see the cel code(s), and the code came out to be 21, which is the vtec spool solenoid valve. So what are my next steps?

It runs fine with the p06 plugged up. When I plugged up the p28, the check engine light came on, come to find out it was the cel code 21 vtec spool solenoid valve. I drove for about 20 minutes, and when I came to park, I noticed my heat meter was on the H. So I have no clue why the ecu would cause my car to overheat.

I have a P28 and i did a D16Z6 swap into my 92 LX. I never experienced the problems u are having. I am going to put my money on that being a bad ECU.

Iluvjae, did you use your LX wiring harness for the swap. I have the DX wiring harness, I was thinking that may have something to do with it.

Yea i used the stock LX wiring harness. I still dont see how the wiring harness could cause your over heating. If its a bad ECU then you could have problems. I never hooked my vtec up and my car ran strong and never over heated. But if you can put the old ECU in and it works fine then im putting my money on the ECU. Also when you install the ECU are you letting the car sit at a steady idle for about 10-15 minutes. You have to make sure you let everything recalibrate in a way/

check if your radiator fan is turning on with either ecu. strange enough your car should run a little rich when the CEL is on and run cooler due to the rich mixture. if your car is overheating with the fan coming on then i'd check to make sure your cooling system is pressuring properly and your thermostat is opening.

I dont think its the ecu. After driving home from work this evening, I noticed my heat meter about 3/4 the way up and rising(w/ the p06). So I will check the radiator/fan/thermostat/coolants/any leaks/water pump/etc tomorrow. Thanks to everyone that had input.
